So often, paying off debt can leave you thinking of the past – past spending, previous loans, perhaps past mistakes. But what if you approached paying off your debt as investing in your future?
In this episode of His & Her Money, we sit down with Zach Pursley, a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. With over $47k of debt paid off within less than three years, Zach is proof that, with the correct mindset, determination, and, at times, sacrifice, it is absolutely possible to become debt-free in a short amount of time.
Having watched his older brother pay off debt, Zach learned from his brother’s mistakes and vowed to pay off his debt as soon as possible – and in a way that didn’t necessarily follow society’s prescribed path through life. Upon starting his job as a flight attendant, he wrote a random amount of money down and worked to pay that much off of his loans in a year.
By choosing to live at home with his parents, live frugally, and be grateful for what he already has rather than wanting the “new,” Zach ended up reaching his goal six months ahead of time. And pretty soon after, he had paid it all off.
Zach attributes his success to his determination, gratitude, and “can do” mindset – all fueled by his strong desire for personal development. Once he was debt-free he believed, he would be able to fully focus on his health, relationships, and self-improvement.
Therefore, each dollar he saved was not only for his loan payoff but also an investment in his future self. Even now, though he is debt-free he continues to live frugally, still considering every penny saved as an investment in his future.
