The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: His & Her Money Show isn’t just a financial podcast. We’re a platform to raise and discuss the issues that are relevant today, be it money, marriage, faith…or sometimes all of the above! We listen and we hear you, and we hope you’re as excited as we are for some much-needed conversation with a much-request guest speaker!

For this episode of the His & Her Money Show, we’ve got Jemar Tisby in the house to talk race, religion, and taking action. Jemar is a hot topic with his new book, The Color of Compromise, and we’re so happy we got him on today to drop facts and wisdom on the racial divide, and most specifically, what our Christian church can do — and what is ISN’T doing — to help curve the disconnect and, hopefully, start to heal the world.

Sitting down today, Jemar tells us all about his book and his own experiences that inspired him to write. Jemar grew up in the Midwest, but he moved to the deep south at the beginning of adulthood and from there, he’s had a front-row seat to the multitude of cultural issues of today. From mass incarceration to poverty and lack of accessible education, the racial divide in America is still very real, and Jemar is hungry for answers to switch things around.

Back in 2014, the death of Michael Brown sparked outrage nationwide – but, also, Jemar noticed a ripple through the church, and not the one he would have expected. The Black Lives Matter movement, simply calling action to the respect and importance of black individuals, had a surprisingly adverse reaction on predominantly white Christians, and the negative push-back was a jarring experience that got Jemar thinking: exactly how long has the church been complicit to racism?

The answer might not surprise you.

Through his new book, Jemar explores the past and present of Christianity and racial justice, fairly, retrospectively, and sometimes painfully, and highlights several key points in the history of America’s stance on race. It’s a ride from start to finish, and we highly recommend you grab your copy today to find out what all the buzz is about because The Color of Compromise is an incredible resource and extremely prevalent in today’s social climate.
